I’m just wondering, why was Godwin against Percy and Mary’s relationship? Am I missing something here, because if I remember correctly didn’t Percy go to Godwin for help? Or was Godwin just a big ass hypocrite?

considering how he raised mary, mostly hypocrisy. in short, he liked shelley until shelley developed feelings for mary. godwin is one of those cases of people who grow away from their radicalism due to circumstance.

so while at first godwin and shelley got along rather well (tho i think godwin was from the lot who thought percy was “too radical”, but i’d need to fact check), that died. percy didn’t get the worst out of this, beyond being extorted for money by godwin. that is already bad, not only considering shelley had been disowned at this point: it’s opportunistic and against what godwin claimed to believe (again, he was an hypocrite), but the worst part of it was definitely for mary because godwin shut her out and cut her off.

godwin had already failed, in my opinion, to be a supportive father when mary jane clairmont insisted on being both terrible to mary and pitting her against claire.

so yes, you’d be correct, at first percy went to godwin, and from there it turned into a shitshow.

this is unrelated, but this is one of the reasons why i think it’s so important to remove shelley from the literary analysis of mary’s works and include godwin in it, but like i said, this is unrelated and a whole different topic.
